Description

About the Artist:

Ted Hoefsloot was a Dutch-South African painter best known for his tranquil and atmospheric landscape scenes. Born in Amsterdam in 1930, he relocated to South Africa in the mid-1950s, where he would spend the rest of his life capturing the country’s distinctive natural beauty on canvas.

Hoefsloot developed a reputation for his sensitive portrayal of rural and semi-arid landscapes, particularly those of the Western Cape and inland regions. His work often features expansive vistas, winding farm roads, distant mountain ranges, and quiet, open terrain. Through a warm, earthy palette and a strong sense of light, he conveyed both the stillness and subtle drama of the South African landscape.

Working primarily in oil, Hoefsloot remained committed to a representational style throughout his career. His paintings are characterised by their accessibility and timeless appeal, making them well-suited to both seasoned collectors and those beginning their journey into original South African art.

Today, his work continues to be appreciated for its decorative quality and its ability to evoke a sense of place. Hoefsloot’s paintings offer a window into a quieter, more contemplative vision of the South African environment, where space, light, and atmosphere take centre stage.
